If I Could Kick Myself
RSV3L over at the RoboSapien.tk forums posted some useful information. Nothing really new to me (and some of it appears to be inaccurate), figuring out the serial connection was one of the first things I did with the RS Media, but it did point out that the Board Support Package (version 0.3.8) contains a working toolchain that can be used to compile programs for the RS Media. The reason I am kicking myself is because I spent quite a while looking at the freescale site, and I never looked at the BSP packages. If it hadn't been for RSV3L, I'd still be puttering around getting nowhere.
Hello World!: Successful test of a simple program compiled using the BSP 0.3.8 tools.
As you can see, the first program I compiled and ran, was Hello World. So I'm unoriginal. Installing the BSP is pretty simple, although the instructions on their site, and some of the ones that come with it, are out of date. Since my first successfully tested program, I have moved on and compiled a few other more useful tools. I'm thinking about releasing a basic tools package for the RS Media, any suggestions of a tool you might find useful would be welcome.
While I was at it I also attached a separate power source to my RS Media for the bluetooth module. That, and replacing some of the batteries in my RS Media seems to have solved all my issues.
Bluetooth Power: Temporary power supply for the bluetooth module. Its old torch body that holds 2AA's. Since it doesn't have a switch, I turn the module on and off by unplugging it.
The advantage of an separate power source for the Bluetooth module is that it can now be used to interact with the RS Media's boot sequence. Previously, the module powered up at the same time as the RS Media's brain, and by the time the connection was established, the boot sequence was over.
Looks like I might be able to do something useful with this sooner than I expected.
