LED vision mod to aid color recognition in low light situation

Step 1

Below is a list of items that you will need for this mod:

1 CD-ROM Audio Cable
1 white color LED
1 cable housing/shield
1 set of small screwdrivers
1 solder iron & solder (optional)
1 roll of thick double sided tape

Step 2

Start by separating the CD-ROM audio cable from its black square plastic housing. Break off the plastic latch first before you pull the cable out of its black square plastic housing (see fig.2).

Step 3

After you have managed to pull out the cables from the black plastic housing, then cut the cable into two with one end around 16cm long.

Step 4

Make sure to test the LED first to find out which end is positive (+ve) and which end is negative (-ve).

Step 5

Slot in each end of the LED pins (legs) into the connectors of the cable (16cm long).
Take note of the postive and negative cables. (see fig.5)

Step 6

Now cut off the 2 connector heads from the other half of the cable and reattached them to the end of the 16cm long cable (see fig.6)

Step 7

Now you will need to remove the back panel from the head. Use a small flat head screwdriver to help pry open the back panel on both sides. It should pop out when you apply some pressure on both sides of the panel (near the latch).

Note: Be very careful not to break the latch when prying out the panel.

 

Step 8

Once you have managed to remove the back panel from the head, you will see the following (see fig.8). Slide the circuit board out to the left first to free up some space. Alternatively you may try to unplug some of the cables found on this board.

Step 9

You may want to lie your RSV2 down so that it would be easier for you to locate the USB Port.
Once you have managed to move the circuit board aside, you should be able to see the 4 pins of the USB Port (see fig.9).

Step 10

Now carefully and gently insert the connectors of your cable to the respective pins of the USB Port (see fig.10).
If you look closely, you will notice there is a marking on the board which says "T2 T1".
The pin nearest to this marking is the negative (-ve) terminal.

Step 11

After you have successfully connected the cables to the pins of the USB Port, then it is time to test the connection.

Place your RSV2 on the floor. Temporarily secure the LED to the top of its head with some electric tape.
Then take its red bowling pin and put it about 1 to 2 inches in front of its color recognition camera in order to make it "Flinch".

It's important to hold the red bowling pin steady (1 to 2 inches away) in front of its camera for a few seconds until it respond.
If you have managed to get the connection correct, then the LED should light up.

Note: The red bowling pin has a better chance of making it "Flinch" as compared to using your hand.

Step 12

Slide back the circuit board into its original location and tuck in any lose cables. Align the cable of the LED to be as parallel to the center of the head and stretch the cable to the correct length before snapping back the back panel of the head.

When putting back the back panel, ensure that you push in both the left and right latch of the back panel into their respective slot simultaneously.

Note: Be very careful not to break the latch when pushing it back into its slot.

 

Step 13

To hide the cable, you will need about 10.5cm of cable housing/shielding.

Step 14

Remove the electric tapes that were used in Step 11 to temporarily secure the LED to the head.
Then feed the LED and cable through the cable housing/shielding.

Step 15

Cut about 2cm of thick double sided tape and stick it at the top of RSV2's head. Press down the cable housing/shielding onto the thick double sided tape for a few seconds until it sticks to it.

Step 16

Try experimenting with different White-Balance settings to see which setting suits your environment.

It may not help in total darkness but after this mod, your Robosapien V2 would be able to recognize colors better in low light situations.
